Great white sharp or white death or white pointer is an exceptionally large mackerel shark found in coastal and offshore waters in almost all the regions, which have a temperature in the range of 12 to 24 degree centigrades. Larger concentration of white shark is found in southern coasts of Australia, off South Africa, California, and Mexico and to some extent in Central Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Highest population of white sharks is found in Dyer Island, South Africa, where much of research on shark is carried out. They are also found in tropical waters of Caribbeans and in Mauritius, Madagascar, Kenya and the Seychelles.

Undoubtedly, great white shard is world’ largest known and alive predatory fish. Great white shark can grow up to 6-6.5 meters in length and up to 2-2.5 tons in weight. Essentially, white shark is an epipelagic fish but they can also be observed in inland tributaries in the presence of rich game like fur seals, sea lions, other sharks and large bony fish species. It is an open ocean dweller, mostly found close to the surface and also down to the depths of up to 1,300 meters.

Seahorse is a genus of fish that also include pipefish and leafy sea dragons. About 32 species of seahorse fishes are found in shallow tropical and temperate waters throughout the world. Seahorses prefer to live in sheltered areas such as grass beds, coral reefs or mangroves. Sizes of seahorse fish ranges from very small (dwarf seahorse), about an inch long to those much larger sized seahorses measuring about one-foot long.

Seahorses are bony fish but do not have any scales. They have a thin skin stretched over a series of bony plates arranged in rings throughout its body. Seahorses swim upright unlike their close relative pipefish, which swim horizontally. They are poor swimmers and thus can be mostly found resting at seabeds or coral reefs. Seahorses have long snouts, which makes it possible for them to suck up food. The eyes can move independently of each other much like a chameleon. They feed on small fish, shrimps and plankton (drifting organisms like animals, plants or bacteria). Seahorses are extensively used in Chinese medicines and herbology.

Goldfish is one of the most common aquarium fish and water garden fish. It is a small member of carp family of fish. It is one of the earliest domesticated fish. Goldfish are small, colorful, inexpensive and popular pond fish. They can survive in ponds as long there is enough oxygen and the pond does not freeze solid. They are usually classified as coldwater fish. They live in unheated aquariums.

Selective breeding of goldfish has produced several color variations over the years, with few being far away from the original golden color of the domesticated fish. Goldfish can lose their golden color by varying the spectrum of light under which they are kept. Goldfish can grow up to 22 inches in length and around 10 pounds in weight. Household goldfish kept in bowls can live up to 6-8 years. There are several varieties of goldfishes such as calico, celestial eye, comet, lionhead, bubble eye, butterfly tail and black moor, among others. Besides, several new varieties are also created by selective breeding.

Electric eel despite the name eel, is not a true eel, rather it is a knifefish or very near to catfish. Electric eels, as the name suggests, can generate a powerful electrical shock that it uses both for hunting and self defense. Electric eels are obligate air breathers, which rise to the surface every 10 minutes or so to gulp the air after which they go back to the bottom.

Electric eels have an elongate and cylindrical body. They can grow up to 2 meters in length and 20 kg in weight. They are the largest species of their biological family. Color on the back is gray-brown and yellow or orange on the belly. Mouth is square and is positioned right at the snout. They have no scales. Electric eels have three organs that generate electricity main organ, hunter’s organ and Sachs organ. These three organs comprise 80% of the body. These organs are made of electrocytes, which are lined up in such a way that current flows through them and produces an electric charge. Electric eels generate an electric pulse in a very similar way to that of a battery. The shock produced by an electric eel could be fatal for an adult human.

Scientists are doing research on antarctic cods for cardiac medicines especially in human conditions involving low heartbeats or patients with the conditions of hypothermia.

They are very large fishes and can be caught in the waters below 2000 meters depth. Fully grown antarctic cod fishes are grayish in color, weigh around 135 kg and have a length of more than 2 meters. The flesh of antarctic cod is white and is rich of high oil content. Although the name is antarctic cod but they do not belong to cod family. Alaska Blackfish, found only in Alaska and eastern Siberia, is a fish that can grow up to 7-inches in length. It has an elongate and cylindrical shape with dark olive-brown coloration. They can be normally found in the densely vegetated areas of lowland swamps, ponds, rivers and lakes. Sluggish and bottom-dwelling fish, Alaska Blackfish use their large pectoral fins to paddles through the vegetation in search of food. They capture their prey with a quick dart. They feed on larvae of insects such as midge and mosquitoes.

Alaska natives love to eat these fishes and feed them to their dogs. Ease of capture and great abundance makes them as principal source of food and as a subsistence fish. They catch them in fall and freeze them to use over winters. Alaska Blackfish can survive extreme cold weather by moving deep up to a depth of 7 to 8 meters when the surface becomes solid ice. They can be easily distinguished from other fishes by their paddle-like pectoral fins and tails, tiny ventral fins and a broad flat head.

They can be found throughout the world in temperate and tropical seas. They are also known as monk sharks, sand devil and monkfish. They bury themselves in mud or sand with only eyes and part of the body exposed. With a blunt snout, they can easily camouflage to blend in the sand and rocks of the ocean bed.

Forward part of the body is broad and flattened and read part retains a muscular that is more typical of other sharks. Their eyes and spiracles are on the top and five gill slits are on the bottom. Pectoral and pelvic fins are large like wings and held horizontally. Majority of the angel sharks grow to a length of about 1.5 meters (5 feet). Japanese angel sharks are known to grow up to 2 meters. They feed on crustaceans, mollusks and other types of fish. They are generally not aggressive but they can bite when stepped on or handled.

Atlantic salmon, known as king of fish, is found in northern Atlantic Ocean and in rivers that flow into the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. The title King of Fish is appropriate for several reasons. Foremost being their capacity to make a tremendous journey during their lifetime. They migrate from fresh water streams to feeding ground in North Atlantic Ocean and back again to spawn at the same place whether they were hatched. Atlantic salmon is an anadromous (habit of migrating from sea to fresh water for spawning) migratory fish unlike common eel, which are catadromous (migrating from fresh water to sea for spawning)

Atlantic salmons are most beautiful fishes; streamlined, silver and graceful. They are considered as symbol of clean and unspoiled waters that run wild into sea. They are very powerful fish and greatest fighters. They feed on larger foods such as Arctic Squids, sand eels, amphipods, arctic shrimp and occasionally herring. During their feeding season they grow rapidly. They do not require salt water. There are numbers of fully freshwater species existing throughout the northern hemisphere.
