Barracuda is a ray-finned fish that is known for its large size (up to six feet in length and a foot in width in some of the species) and fearsome appearance. Barracudas can be found in tropical and sub tropical oceans throughout the world. It can be found only in salt waters. They are found both singly or in swarms around reefs and also in open sea. Barracuda is a voracious predator that hunts using a strategy of wait and ambush. They rely on short bursts of speed to overrun their prey. It can reach a speed of up to 27 mph or 43 kmph.

Barracuda has a long and fairly compressed body that is covered with small and smooth scales. Large barracudas are generally solitary in their habitats and do not stick around to care for their younger ones. They feed on fish of all types. Many a times, large barracudas eat young barracudas. Like sharks, barracudas have a bad reputation of being dangerous to human beings. They often mistake snorkelers as predators and follow them to scavenge the remains of prey after an attack. Barracudas are formidable hunters and thus should be respected. They can perfectly defend themselves against human attacks. Hand feeding or trying to touch them should be strictly avoided.

Bull Shark is a shark that is widespread all over the world in warm and shallow waters along coasts and in rivers. The name bull shark comes from stocky shape, broad and flat snout and aggressive and unpredictable behavior. Since the bull sharks dwell in shallow waters, they are more dangerous to human beings than any other species of sharks. Three shark species that are most likely to attack human beings include bull sharks, tiger sharks and great white sharks. They can travel far up the rivers and thus are responsible for the majority of shark attacks on humans.

Bull sharks can tolerate fresh water unlike most of the other marine sharks. Due to its wide range and diverse habitats, there are many names for bull sharks such as Sundarbans or Ganges shark in India, Zambezi shark or simply Zambi in Africa and Nicaragua shark, among other. Bull shark is found in different geographical locations throughout the world and can travel long distances. Bull sharks are large and stout animals that can reach up to 7 feet in length and weigh up to 90 kg. They feed on fish, rays, dolphins, turtles, birds, mollusks and crustaceans.

Pictures of Fish Bat Ray Fishes Pictures and Bat Ray Fishes Kind

Bat Ray is an eagle ray fish that can be found in muddy or sandy sloughs, estuaries, bays, kelp beds and rocky-bottomed shoreline in the eastern Pacific Ocean between the Oregon coast and the Gulf of California. Largest specimens of bat ray can grow up to 90 kg with a wingspan of 1.8 meters. Bat rays can live in environment with large range of salinities. Currently, bat rays are fished commercially in Mexico but not in the United States.

Bat rays feed on mollusks, crustaceans and small fish on the seabed. They use their wing-like pectoral fins to move sand and expose prey animals. They can dig trenches up to 20 cm deep to expose buried prey. Like other stingrays, bat rays have a venomous spine in its tail near the base, which is not considered dangerous to human beings except when attacked or frightened. Bat rays are very popular in marine parks where the visitors are often allowed to touch or stroke ray, usually on the wing.

Barbel, species of fresh water fish, is known as common barbel. It is native throughout Europe and China. In Italy and Morocco, it has become an established ‘Introduced Species’. Barbel is ideally suited to fast flowing waters. They are found at the bottom of the rivers as well as in the open waters. However, for feeding they visit deep waters in the rivers with a rocky or gravel bottom. Male barbels become mature after 3-4 years and females after 5-8 years.

Size of the adult barbel is up to 4 feet in length and 12 kg in weight. Barbel has a slightly laterally compressed body and lacks an adipose fin. The overall appearance is dark brown or fray mottled. Its underside is light colored and the fins have a reddish tinge. They feed on organisms such as crustaceans, insect larvae and mollusks. In UK, they play a minor role in commercial aquaculture; however, they are very popular sport fish. Popularity of barbels in UK is so much that angling societies specifically promote the pursuit and conservation of the species.

Bamboo Shark is a family of fish that contains several different species including brown-banded bamboo shark, gray bamboo shark and white spotted bamboo shark, among other. It is a bottom dwelling fish. Bamboo sharks can be found in many geographical locations including Indonesia, India, Arabia, China, China, Japan, Philippines and many other countries. Bamboo sharks are also found in coral reefs.

Brown banded bamboo sharks have brown bands along its body. Bands fade with age much like those of the tiger sharks. White spotted bamboo shark is grayish brown with small white spots dotted all over its body. All the bamboo sharks are harmless to human beings. However, human beings do pose threats to bamboo sharks. Encounters between a human being and a bamboo shark would normally result worse for the shark. Bamboo sharks are nocturnal that comes out during the night for eating. They mostly feed on invertebrates. They eat small fish, crustaceans and other small sea animals. Bamboo sharks are generally sluggish bottom feeders that will not go after large fish.

Australian Lungfish or Queensland lungfish is one of the only six extant lungfish species in the world. It belongs to an ancient family of fleshy finned species. It is one of the oldest living vertebrate genera on the planet. Australian lungfish is the representatives of six extant and ancient air-breathing lungfishes that flourished during the Devonian period (around 400 million years ago) and is the most primitive surviving member of this lineage. Australian Lungfish is generally a sedentary species that spends its life withing a restricted area.

Out of the five other fresh water lungfish species, four are found in Africa and one is found in South America. Australian lungfish can live out of the water for several days if it is kept moist. However, it cannot survive total water depletion unlike its African counterparts. They live in slow-flowing waters and rivers including water reservoirs that have some aquatic vegetation present on the banks. It can be found over mud, sand or gravel bottoms. Although Australian lungfish is tolerant of cold but it prefers waters with temperature 15 to 25 degree centigrades.

One of the most abundant species of fish on the planet, Atlantic Herring, can be found on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean congregating together in large swarms. They have an extensive range that covers the North Atlantic waters such as Gulf of Maine, Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Labrador Sea, the Davis Straits, Denmark Straits, the Baltic Sea, the English Channel, Celtic Sea, Irish Sea, Bay of Biscay, Norwegian Sea and North Sea. Despite being found in the northern waters, surrounding Arctic they are not considered Arctic species.

Atlantic herring congregates near the coastal areas in massive swarms especially in the cold waters of semi enclosed Gulf of Maine and Gulf of St. Lawrence and therefore it has been an important part of the economy of New England and Canadian Maritime Provinces. Several North Atlantic herring schools have measured up to 4 cubic kilometers in size, containing an estimated 4 billion fish . It can grow up to 45 cm long and weigh up to 500 grams. Atlantic herrings feed on copepods, krill and small fish. Their natural predators are whale, seals, cods and other large fish.

Arowana is a fresh water bony fish. Arowana family of fish has a bony head and elongate body that is covered by large and heavy scales with a mosaic pattern of canals. Dorsal and the anal fins have soft rays and are long. Pectoral and ventral fins are small. Arowana is also sometimes known as bonytongues, as they have a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth – tongue, equipped with teeth that bite against teeth on the roof of the mouth.

Arowana can obtain oxygen from air by sucking into the swim bladder that is lined with capillaries like lung tissues. It is a carnivorous fish, often being specialized surface feeder. It is an excellent jumper, with some of the species being capable of jumping up to 6 feet (2 meters) from the water surface to catch insects and birds from overhanging branches of trees in South America. Due to the excellent jumping capabilities, they have been nicknamed as ‘water monkeys’. It has often been rumored that Arowana have captured prey as large as low flying bats and small birds.

Pictures of Fish Antarctic Icefish Fishes Pictures and Antarctica Icefish Fishes Kind

Antarctic Icefish is a largely endemic, dominant fish in the cold continental waters surrounding Antarctica. Majority of the Antarctic Icefish live at seawater temperature -2 and 4 degree centigrades but some of the sub polar species inhabit waters that may be as warm as 10 degree centigrades around New Zealand and South America.

Antarctic Icefish have evolved a variety of interesting physiological and biochemical adaptations with which they can survive in cold and stable seawater temperatures of Southern Ocean, many being able to survive in the freezing and ice-laden waters. Most notable physiological aspect of Antarctic Icefish is they have only 1% hemoglobin unlike other animal species that have up to 45% hemoglobin in their blood. They can survive without large parts of hemoglobin due to high oxygen contents of cold waters of southern ocean and also due to the fact that oxygen is absorbed and distributed directly by the plasma. Antarctic Icefish is considered to the only marine fish species flock.

Carp is a common name for various fresh water fish . Carp is a very large group of fish originally from Eurasia and Southeast Asia. Carp has long been used as an important food fish for humans. Carp is a very popular ornamental fish in Aquarium and ponds (goldfishes being one of the most popular examples of Carps). As a result, carps have been introduced to various regions.

The most notable and popular ornamental carp is coarse fish that are difficult to hook. In USA, carp is classified as a rough fish. Many of the states have also started viewing the carps as angling fish instead of maligned pest. Carps are considered as the queen of rivers and a stately and subtle fish. In England, carps have been naturalized though earlier the carps were not bred in England. In Australia, scientific studies have proved that carps are the cause of permanent turbidity and loss of submerged vegetation system, with severe consequences for river ecosystems water quality and native fish species.
