Barracuda is a ray-finned fish that is known for its large size (up to six feet in length and a foot in width in some of the species) and fearsome appearance. Barracudas can be found in tropical and sub tropical oceans throughout the world. It can be found only in salt waters. They are found both singly or in swarms around reefs and also in open sea. Barracuda is a voracious predator that hunts using a strategy of wait and ambush. They rely on short bursts of speed to overrun their prey. It can reach a speed of up to 27 mph or 43 kmph.

Barracuda has a long and fairly compressed body that is covered with small and smooth scales. Large barracudas are generally solitary in their habitats and do not stick around to care for their younger ones. They feed on fish of all types. Many a times, large barracudas eat young barracudas. Like sharks, barracudas have a bad reputation of being dangerous to human beings. They often mistake snorkelers as predators and follow them to scavenge the remains of prey after an attack. Barracudas are formidable hunters and thus should be respected. They can perfectly defend themselves against human attacks. Hand feeding or trying to touch them should be strictly avoided.
