Cookie Cutter Shark, also known as Cigar Shark or Luminous Shark, is a rarely seen dogfish shark, which can be found at depth of more than 1000 meters in deep water sea. Cookie cutter shark derives its name from its typical feeding habit and style in which it cuts perfectly circular (cookie-cutter-shaped) pieces from the skins of mammals and other preys. There have been stray incidences where cookie cutter shark took a bite out of rubber sonar dome of submarines and thereby causing damage to the submarine.
Measuring 20 inches in length, cookie cutter shark is a small fish with cigar-shaped body, large eyes with green pupils and prominent feeding teeth on its lower jaws. They have two dorsal fins towards its tail. Underside is bio-luminescent, glowing pale-blue green matching with the background light from the ocean’s surface, which serves as camouflage to creatures beneath it. Small patch remains black with which it deceived its prey into thinking that it is an even smaller fish. Thereby, the predatory fish itself becomes the prey of cookie cutter shark.
