Dragonet is a small fish of diverse families found in the tropical waters of the western Indo-pacific. Dragonets are well known for highly colorful appearance and cryptic patterns. Dragonets are generally bottom-dwelling fishes and prefer sandy or rocky surfaces or sometimes near reefs. Bright colors and showy fins make them the most popular aquarium fishes, mandarin dragonets being the most commercial variety for aquariums. Generally, they work best in reef aquariums of size 55 gallons and more.

Dragonet has an elongate and a scaleless body with strong spine guards, which may be poisonous in some of the species. Their fins are large, elongate and showy. They have flattened and triangular heads with large mouth and eyes. Size of dragonets varies depending upon the species; the largest (Longtail Dragonet) reaches a length of 30 cm (1 feet) and the other hand, smallest species (Saint Helena Dragonet) is just 2 cm long. Dragonets feed on crustaceans, worms and other small invertebrates picked from the substrates. In captivity, dragonets eat only live food, often starving to death if sufficient live food items are available.
