Dojo Loach is a freshwater fish of loach family and native to Asia. It is very popular as an aquarium fish throughout the world. Dojo loach is also known by an alternate name Weather Loach due to their ability to detect changes in barometric pressure at the time of likely storms. Dojo loach is a hardy fish that can live in poor quality water and can also survive out of water for some time. Besides being popular aquarium fish, Dojo Loach is also a common food fish in East Asia, where they are grown in large scale through fish farming.

Dojo loach is a slender and eel-like fish that can grow up to 30cm (1 feet) long. They come in various colors ranging from yellow to olive green and lighter brown or grey. Their mouth is surrounded by three sets of barbels, which are used to sift through silt or pebbles to locate their food. Besides, they also use the barbels to to dig under gravel and sand to hide them in case of threats from their predators.
Dolly Varden Trout is a subspecies of salmon family. Biologically a char fish, Dolly Varden Trout is an anadromous fish, which migrate on regular basis. A significant population dolly varden trout exists in the landlocked waterways in the northwest United States. Bull trout and arctic char that are identical in appearance to dolly varden trouts were originally known as dolly varden trout; however, they have been subsequently recognized as different species.

The back and the sides of dolly varden trout are olive green or muddy grey with scattered pale yellow or pink-yellow spots and white shade on the belly. Small red spots, not very distinctive, are found on the lower sides. Fins are usually plain except for few light spots on the base of caudal fin rays. Dolly varden trouts can be found abundantly in coastal waters of the North Pacific from Puget Sound to the Alaska Peninsula and into the eastern Aleutians, across the Bering Sea and the Arctic Sea.

Dragonet is a small fish of diverse families found in the tropical waters of the western Indo-pacific. Dragonets are well known for highly colorful appearance and cryptic patterns. Dragonets are generally bottom-dwelling fishes and prefer sandy or rocky surfaces or sometimes near reefs. Bright colors and showy fins make them the most popular aquarium fishes, mandarin dragonets being the most commercial variety for aquariums. Generally, they work best in reef aquariums of size 55 gallons and more.

Dragonet has an elongate and a scaleless body with strong spine guards, which may be poisonous in some of the species. Their fins are large, elongate and showy. They have flattened and triangular heads with large mouth and eyes. Size of dragonets varies depending upon the species; the largest (Longtail Dragonet) reaches a length of 30 cm (1 feet) and the other hand, smallest species (Saint Helena Dragonet) is just 2 cm long. Dragonets feed on crustaceans, worms and other small invertebrates picked from the substrates. In captivity, dragonets eat only live food, often starving to death if sufficient live food items are available.

Dwarf Gourami is a highly popular aquarium fish due to its almost translucent blue color and red to dark orange vertical stripes. They have originated from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh; however, they have become widespread outside of the native range. Dwarf gouramis inhabit slow moving streams, rivulets and lakes with plenty of vegetations. Fish breeders have created many different colored varieties of dwarf gouramis such as neon red or neon blue.

Dwarf gouramis are small fish with an average size of 4-5 cm with the largest size of about 9cm. Male fishes have diagonal stripes of alternating blue and red colors while females are silvery. They have touch sensitive cells on their pelvic fins. Average lifespan of dwarf gouramis is about four years but with proper care in captivity, they can live much longer. Being peaceful fish, they work well in most of the aquariums with other varieties of fishes. They can easily tolerate high temperatures up to 27 degree celsius. They prefer algae and meaty foods and also eat frozen or freeze-dried flakes, bloodworms, tubifex and shrimps.

Eagle Ray is a family of large ray fishes that live in the open sea. Eagle rays are excellent swimmers and can also jump several meters above the sea levels. Spotted eagle rays, known as bonnet rays, have a very beautiful ray with numerous white spots on its overall inky body. Bonnet rays can grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) in length. Spotted eagle rays are widespread in the tropical areas of all the oceans including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

Eagle rays have long tails and well-defined bodies as compared to other ray fishes. Their size range from 48cm (19 inches) to 9 meters (30 feet) long. They feed on snails, mussels and crustaceans by crushing their shells with the help of their extremely hard teeth. Common eagle rays are distributed all over the Eastern Atlantic including the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea. Bat eagle ray is an important species in the Pacific Ocean. Common eagle rays can grow up to 180cm (6 feet) including their tail. Eagle rays generally live close to coastal areas in the depths 1-30 meters. Their tail looks like a whip, which may be as long as the entire body, and is armed with a sting. They can be often spotted cruising along the sandy beaches in very shallow waters.

Dogfish is a common name for number of small sharks that can be found in in the northeast Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean Ocean. In freshwater lakes and rivers, dogfish usually refers to Bowfin family. Dog fishes are known to have lived for many years, even up to 25-30 years. Dogfishes are generally regarded as a nuisance by the fishermen because it tends to latch onto almost anything put in the water including human hands.

Dogfishes are slender and small sharks with a flattened head and a snout tapering to a blunt tip. Their average size is 2.5-3 feet long and larger species of 4-feet and above are also known. They feed on small fish, squids and crustaceans. Dogfishes hunt both alone as well as in groups with other dogfishes. They have long jaws with low, flat, grinding teeth. They also possess a set of small and very sharp teeth. Population of dogfishes has declined sharply and hence it is illegal to kill them. However, in Britain and especially in the south of England, dogfishes are regarded as delicacy, mostly as a less costly alternative to cods.

Discus is a genus of three species of freshwater Cichlid Fish native to Amazon River Basin. With their widespread popularity as excellent aquarium fish, aquaculture of discus has become a major industry in Asia. The name discus has been derived from their typical body shape resembling a discus or a disc. All the three species of discus have different geographic distribution in Brazil, Columbia and Peru.

Like all the Cichlid fish, discus have a laterally compressed body shape. However, lack of extended finnage gives them a more rounded shape. Sides of discus fish are generally patterned in shades of green, red, brown and blue. Their length and height of a fully grown discus fish are almost same, about 20-25 cm. Discus is usually a shy and peaceful inhabitant in the aquariums. They tend to be sensitive to excessive noise and disturbance. Discus fish come in three layers of colors: the base color (cream to red-brown), a secondary color (blue or green metallic color) and the black pigment that covers the vertical bars and allows the fish to darken or lighten its color.

Eels or true eels are an order of fish with many sub-orders, families, genera and species. Electric eels and spiny eels are not the members of true eels despite their similarly shaped bodies. Freshwater eels and marine eels are the most popular food items in Japanese, Korean and Chinese cuisines especially in Cantonese and Shanghai cuisines. European eels and many other freshwater eels are also famous in Europe and the United States.

Eels have an elongated body and their length ranges from 5cm to 3.75 meters depending upon the species. Eels do not have pelvic fins and in many species even pectoral fins are absent. Their dorsal and anal fins are fused with the caudal fins or tail fins. Most of the eels live in shallow waters or hide at the bottom layers of the ocean. They dwell in holes, called as eel pits. Some of the species are active swimmers and live at a depth of more than 500 meters. While feeding, eels drift along the water surface and eat dissolved nutrients.
