Eagle Ray is a family of large ray fishes that live in the open sea. Eagle rays are excellent swimmers and can also jump several meters above the sea levels. Spotted eagle rays,  known as bonnet rays, have a very beautiful ray with numerous white spots on its overall inky body. Bonnet rays can grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) in length. Spotted eagle rays are widespread in the tropical areas of all the oceans including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

Eagle rays have long tails and well-defined bodies as compared to other ray fishes. Their size range from 48cm (19 inches) to 9 meters (30 feet) long. They feed on snails, mussels and crustaceans by crushing their shells with the help of their extremely hard teeth. Common eagle rays are distributed all over the Eastern Atlantic including the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea. Bat eagle ray is an important species in the Pacific Ocean. Common eagle rays can grow up to 180cm (6 feet) including their tail. Eagle rays generally live close to coastal areas in the depths 1-30 meters. Their tail looks like a whip, which may be as long as the entire body, and is armed with a sting. They can be often spotted cruising along the sandy beaches in very shallow waters.

Dogfish is a common name for number of small sharks that can be found in in the northeast Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean Ocean. In freshwater lakes and rivers, dogfish usually refers to Bowfin family. Dog fishes are known to have lived for many years, even up to 25-30 years. Dogfishes are generally regarded as a nuisance by the fishermen because it tends to latch onto almost anything put in the water including human hands.

Dogfishes are slender and small sharks with a flattened head and a snout tapering to a blunt tip. Their average size is 2.5-3 feet long and larger species of 4-feet and above are also known. They feed on small fish, squids and crustaceans. Dogfishes hunt both alone as well as in groups with other dogfishes.  They have long jaws with low, flat, grinding teeth. They also possess a set of small and very sharp teeth. Population of dogfishes has declined sharply and hence it is illegal to kill them. However, in Britain and especially in the south of England, dogfishes are regarded as delicacy, mostly as a less costly alternative to cods.

Pictures of Fish Electric Ray Pictures and Electric Ray Fishes Kind

Electric Rays are known for generating an electrical discharge ranging from 8-200 volts depending upon the species. They use the electrical discharge for catching their prey and also as a defense against their predators. Electric rays have been known humans since ages. Ancient Greeks often used electric rays for providing relief from the pain of childbirth and headaches.

Electric ray fishes have enlarged and rounded pectoral fins with two moderately large rounded and angular dorsal fins. They have a stout and muscular tail with a fairly developed caudal fin. The entire body is thick and flabby with soft and loose skin lacking dermal denticles and thorns. They have a pair of kidney-shaped electric organs that are located at the base of the pectoral fins. Electric rays are usually bottom-dwelling fish that can be found from shallow coastal waters to a depth of over 1000 meters. Unlike other rays, electric rays are generally sluggish and slow moving fishes, which often propel themselves with their tails instead of using disc-shaped bodies. They feed on invertebrates and small fish

Cichlid is a species of fish from one of the largest vertebrate families of fish. Size of Cichlid range from as small as 1-inch in length to as large as 1-meter in length in some of the species. Besides, as a group, Cichlid shows a wide variety of shapes ranging from laterally compressed species to cylindrical and highly elongated species. Cichlid species are found abundantly in freshwaters all over the world, greatest diversity being found in Africa and South America.

Typically, Cichlid are medium-sized fish with oval shape and slightly laterally compressed, generally similar to North American sunfishes terms of its behavior and ecology. Some of the species are important food sources while some are prized game fishes. Besides, many of the species are highly valued in aquaculture. Significant populations of Cichlid are found in Central America from Panama to the Mexican portion of North America. Although Cichlid is a freshwater fish but they can live easily in freshwater marshes and mangrove swamps. They feed primarily on algae, plants and sometimes on small animals.

Barracuda is a ray-finned fish that is known for its large size (up to six feet in length and a foot in width in some of the species) and fearsome appearance. Barracudas can be found in tropical and sub tropical oceans throughout the world. It can be found only in salt waters. They are found both singly or in swarms around reefs and also in open sea. Barracuda is a voracious predator that hunts using a strategy of wait and ambush. They rely on short bursts of speed to overrun their prey. It can reach a speed of up to 27 mph or 43 kmph.

Barracuda has a long and fairly compressed body that is covered with small and smooth scales. Large barracudas are generally solitary in their habitats and do not stick around to care for their younger ones. They feed on fish of all types. Many a times, large barracudas eat young barracudas. Like sharks, barracudas have a bad reputation of being dangerous to human beings. They often mistake snorkelers as predators and follow them to scavenge the remains of prey after an attack. Barracudas are formidable hunters and thus should be respected. They can perfectly defend themselves against human attacks. Hand feeding or trying to touch them should be strictly avoided.

Australian Lungfish or Queensland lungfish is one of the only six extant lungfish species in the world. It belongs to an ancient family of fleshy finned species. It is one of the oldest living vertebrate genera on the planet. Australian lungfish is the representatives of six extant and ancient air-breathing lungfishes that flourished during the Devonian period (around 400 million years ago) and is the most primitive surviving member of this lineage. Australian Lungfish is generally a sedentary species that spends its life withing a restricted area.

Out of the five other fresh water lungfish species, four are found in Africa and one is found in South America. Australian lungfish can live out of the water for several days if it is kept moist. However, it cannot survive total water depletion unlike its African counterparts. They live in slow-flowing waters and rivers including water reservoirs that have some aquatic vegetation present on the banks. It can be found over mud, sand or gravel bottoms. Although Australian lungfish is tolerant of cold but it prefers waters with temperature 15 to 25 degree centigrades.

Arowana is a fresh water bony fish. Arowana family of fish has a bony head and elongate body that is covered by large and heavy scales with a mosaic pattern of canals. Dorsal and the anal fins have soft rays and are long. Pectoral and ventral fins are small. Arowana is also sometimes known as bonytongues, as they have a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth – tongue, equipped with teeth that bite against teeth on the roof of the mouth.

Arowana can obtain oxygen from air by sucking into the swim bladder that is lined with capillaries like lung tissues. It is a carnivorous fish, often being specialized surface feeder. It is an excellent jumper, with some of the species being capable of jumping up to 6 feet (2 meters) from the water surface to catch insects and birds from overhanging branches of trees in South America. Due to the excellent jumping capabilities, they have been nicknamed as ‘water monkeys’. It has often been rumored that Arowana have captured prey as large as low flying bats and small birds.
