Eagle Ray is a family of large ray fishes that live in the open sea. Eagle rays are excellent swimmers and can also jump several meters above the sea levels. Spotted eagle rays,  known as bonnet rays, have a very beautiful ray with numerous white spots on its overall inky body. Bonnet rays can grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) in length. Spotted eagle rays are widespread in the tropical areas of all the oceans including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

Eagle rays have long tails and well-defined bodies as compared to other ray fishes. Their size range from 48cm (19 inches) to 9 meters (30 feet) long. They feed on snails, mussels and crustaceans by crushing their shells with the help of their extremely hard teeth. Common eagle rays are distributed all over the Eastern Atlantic including the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea. Bat eagle ray is an important species in the Pacific Ocean. Common eagle rays can grow up to 180cm (6 feet) including their tail. Eagle rays generally live close to coastal areas in the depths 1-30 meters. Their tail looks like a whip, which may be as long as the entire body, and is armed with a sting. They can be often spotted cruising along the sandy beaches in very shallow waters.

Coho Salmon is a species of migratory fishes in the salmon family. Coho salmons are also called as Silver Salmons. Range of Coho Salmons extends from both sides of  the North Pacific Ocean from Eastern Russia, around the Bering Sea to mainland Alaska and in south all the way to California. Besides, large populations of Coho Salmons have also been introduced in Great Lakes and several landlocked reservoirs throughout the United States.

Coho Salmons have silver sides and dark blue blacks. During spawning, jaws and teeth become hooked, their sides become bright red colored, head and back becomes bluish green and belly becomes darker with spots. Average size of Coho Salmons is 11 pounds in weight and 28 inches in length. They feed on planktons, insects and small fishes. Coho Salmons are one of the most popular game fishes in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Coho Salmons are the backbone of Alaska Fishery, contributing about 3.5% of the annual fish harvest. Coho Salmons are also considered as the best staple diet by by many people.

Pictures of Fish Eulachon Pictures and Eulachon Fishes Kind

Eulachon is a small anadromous ocean fish native along the Pacific Coast of North America from Northern California to Alaska. Eulachon is an important part of the diet of many ocean and shore predators. Besides, it is also used as a prominent source of food item for many people living near its spawning streams. Eulachons are also known by other names such as hooligan, ooligan or candlefish. Candlefish is the name given by early explorers of eulachons who often dried fatty spawning fish and strung on a wick, to be burned as a candle.

Eulachons often spend most of their adult lives in the ocean and return to their native freshwater streams and rivers to spawn. Due to this typical nature, one stream may see regular large runs of eulachons while a neighboring stream may have very few or none. In may happen that a river that  sees large runs of eulachons every year, may all of a sudden witness a year with no returns of eulachons. Eulachon feed mainly on planktons, fish eggs, insect larvae and small crustaceans. Eulachon is an important part of the diet and a valuable trade item for several communities along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska.

Barracuda is a ray-finned fish that is known for its large size (up to six feet in length and a foot in width in some of the species) and fearsome appearance. Barracudas can be found in tropical and sub tropical oceans throughout the world. It can be found only in salt waters. They are found both singly or in swarms around reefs and also in open sea. Barracuda is a voracious predator that hunts using a strategy of wait and ambush. They rely on short bursts of speed to overrun their prey. It can reach a speed of up to 27 mph or 43 kmph.

Barracuda has a long and fairly compressed body that is covered with small and smooth scales. Large barracudas are generally solitary in their habitats and do not stick around to care for their younger ones. They feed on fish of all types. Many a times, large barracudas eat young barracudas. Like sharks, barracudas have a bad reputation of being dangerous to human beings. They often mistake snorkelers as predators and follow them to scavenge the remains of prey after an attack. Barracudas are formidable hunters and thus should be respected. They can perfectly defend themselves against human attacks. Hand feeding or trying to touch them should be strictly avoided.

Antarctic Icefish is a largely endemic, dominant fish in the cold continental waters surrounding Antarctica. Majority of the Antarctic Icefish live at seawater temperature -2 and 4 degree centigrades but some of the sub polar species inhabit waters that may be as warm as 10 degree centigrades around New Zealand and South America.

Antarctic Icefish have evolved a variety of interesting physiological and biochemical adaptations with which they can survive in cold and stable seawater temperatures of Southern Ocean, many being able to survive in the freezing and ice-laden waters. Most notable physiological aspect of Antarctic Icefish is they have only 1% hemoglobin unlike other animal species that have up to 45% hemoglobin in their blood. They can survive without large parts of hemoglobin due to high oxygen contents of cold waters of southern ocean and also due to the fact that oxygen is absorbed and distributed directly by the plasma. Antarctic Icefish is considered to the only marine fish species flock.

Great white sharp or white death or white pointer is an exceptionally large mackerel shark found in coastal and offshore waters in almost all the regions, which have a temperature in the range of 12 to 24 degree centigrades. Larger concentration of white shark is found in southern coasts of Australia, off South Africa, California, and Mexico and to some extent in Central Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Highest population of white sharks is found in Dyer Island, South Africa, where much of research on shark is carried out. They are also found in tropical waters of Caribbeans and in Mauritius, Madagascar, Kenya and the Seychelles.

Undoubtedly, great white shard is world’ largest known and alive predatory fish. Great white shark can grow up to 6-6.5 meters in length and up to 2-2.5 tons in weight. Essentially, white shark is an epipelagic fish but they can also be observed in inland tributaries in the presence of rich game like fur seals, sea lions, other sharks and large bony fish species. It is an open ocean dweller, mostly found close to the surface and also down to the depths of up to 1,300 meters.

Electric eel despite the name eel, is not a true eel, rather it is a knifefish or very near to catfish. Electric eels, as the name suggests, can generate a powerful electrical shock that it uses both for hunting and self defense. Electric eels are obligate air breathers, which rise to the surface every 10 minutes or so to gulp the air after which they go back to the bottom.

Electric eels have an elongate and cylindrical body. They can grow up to 2 meters in length and 20 kg in weight. They are the largest species of their biological family. Color on the back is gray-brown and yellow or orange on the belly. Mouth is square and is positioned right at the snout. They have no scales. Electric eels have three organs that generate electricity main organ, hunter’s organ and Sachs organ. These three organs comprise 80% of the body. These organs are made of electrocytes, which are lined up in such a way that current flows through them and produces an electric charge. Electric eels generate an electric pulse in a very similar way to that of a battery. The shock produced by an electric eel could be fatal for an adult human.

Antarctic Cod Fish Pictures and Antarctic Cod Fishes Kind

Antarctic cod fish is famous for producing antifreeze glycoprotein that allows it to survive in the ice laden waters of southern sea surrounding Antarctic sea. They are also known as antarctic toothfish. Antarctic cods have a heartbeat rate of once every six seconds. Scientists are doing research on antarctic cods for cardiac medicines especially in human conditions involving low heartbeats or patients with the conditions of hypothermia.

They are very large fishes and can be caught in the waters below 2000 meters depth. Fully grown antarctic cod fishes are grayish in color, weigh around 135 kg and have a length of more than 2 meters. The flesh of antarctic cod is white and is rich of high oil content. Although the name is antarctic cod but they do not belong to cod family. The taste is very similar to cod and that is why the name antarctic cod. They generally feed on various types of fish. However, they are also known to eat almost anything including the remains of penguins caught by seals and orca on the surfaces.

African lungfishes have their usual habitats in swamps and marshes in shallow waters and small rivers. They can also be found in large lakes like Lake Victoria. They have a snake-like appearance. There are total four species of African lungfishes. They are carnivores and feed on small fishes and frogs. They can live out of water for many months the burrow of hardened mud beneath dried-up streambed. Native Africans often dig the lungfishes up, burrow and store it for future use as a fresh fish.

African lungfishes have a strong taste; people like it very much or dislike it absolutely. They range in size from 60 to 200 cm. They have two lungs that enable them to breathe air through another lung when the water has dried-up. They are considered as fearless and aggressive fishes that attack any moving objects including human hands. In many states, export of lungfishes is legally banned. They can survive in any types of atmosphere including low oxygen areas.
