Dogfish is a common name for number of small sharks that can be found in in the northeast Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean Ocean. In freshwater lakes and rivers, dogfish usually refers to Bowfin family. Dog fishes are known to have lived for many years, even up to 25-30 years. Dogfishes are generally regarded as a nuisance by the fishermen because it tends to latch onto almost anything put in the water including human hands.

Dogfishes are slender and small sharks with a flattened head and a snout tapering to a blunt tip. Their average size is 2.5-3 feet long and larger species of 4-feet and above are also known. They feed on small fish, squids and crustaceans. Dogfishes hunt both alone as well as in groups with other dogfishes.  They have long jaws with low, flat, grinding teeth. They also possess a set of small and very sharp teeth. Population of dogfishes has declined sharply and hence it is illegal to kill them. However, in Britain and especially in the south of England, dogfishes are regarded as delicacy, mostly as a less costly alternative to cods.

Eels or true eels are an order of fish with many sub-orders, families, genera and species. Electric eels and spiny eels are not the members of true eels despite their similarly shaped bodies. Freshwater eels and marine eels are the most popular food items in Japanese, Korean and Chinese cuisines especially in Cantonese and Shanghai cuisines. European eels and many other freshwater eels are also famous in Europe and the United States.

Eels have an elongated body and their length ranges from 5cm to 3.75 meters depending upon the species. Eels do not have pelvic fins and in many species even pectoral fins are absent. Their dorsal and anal fins are fused with the caudal fins or tail fins. Most of the eels live in shallow waters or hide at the bottom layers of the ocean. They dwell in holes, called as eel pits. Some of the species are active swimmers and live at a depth of more than 500 meters. While feeding, eels drift along the water surface and eat dissolved nutrients.

Deepwater Stingray is a species of ray fish that have a significant population on continental slopes from South Africa to Japan and Australia. Minor population of deepwater stingray or giant stingaree across Indo-West and Central Pacific. Some of the varieties have also been spotted on the East Coast of South Africa, Mozambique, Southern India, Southern China, Queensland, New South Wales and Hawaii.

Deepwater stingray is a heavy-bodied ray that can grow to at least 270 cm (9 feet) length. They have a moderately short and stout tail with a serrated stinging spine behind the pelvic fins. Their snout is moderately elongated and broadly angular. Small eyes are just ahead of the spiracles. Their mouth is straight and broad with small, oval rounded teeth. Dorsal fins are absent in deepwater stingrays. Caudal fin long, moderately large and leaf-shaped. Upperparts are purple brown or purple grey, underparts are white and tail is completely dark. Deepwater stingrays feed on fishes, lobsters, prawns and crabs. They are not very useful to humans though its meat is used at some places.

Danio is a genus of fish species that comprises of many of the species of Danionins. The name comes from Bengali word that translates into ‘of the rice field’. Danios are native to fresh water rivers and streams of southeast Asia and are also found throughout the world as aquaculture species. Several species have been recently discovered in remote Islands of Myanmar.

Danios have two pairs of long barbels, which generally have horizontal stripes. Some of the species have vertical bars. Their size ranges from 4-15 cm in length. In the aquariums, they tend to live for 2-3 years while in wilds, they generally do not live for more than a year. Danios mainly feed on crustaceans, insects, worms and planktons in wild. In aquariums, they feed on a variety of foods including frozen food and flakes. They are very sociable and easy to maintain and thus are very popular for keeping in aquariums. Danios should be kept in tanks with water temperature in the range of 18-24 Celsius. They are good at jumping and therefore the lid of tanks should be tight fitting.

Pictures of Fish Cisco Fishes Pictures and Cisco Fishes Kind

Cisco is a salmonid (family of ray-finned fish) fish. They differ from other members of the genus by having upper and lower jaws of approximately equal length. Five endemic species of Laurentian Great Lakes are thought to be of very recent evolution. Cisco species have recently been subjected to lots of research that is being carried out to determine the relationships among the species that have evolved recently.

Ciscoes are extensively explored in commercial fisheries especially in the Laurentian Great Lakes, where deep water forms are considered as the basis of chub fishery. Chub fishery was exclusively based on the various species of Ciscoes. The fishery continues even when the stocks of Ciscoes are falling and other species are spreading through the system. At many places, Cisco species have declined in great numbers. Some of the breeders believe that Ciscoes represent  an incipient species flock. Lots of debates have taken place to  ascertain which were the true species and which were not, particularly due to the facts that some of the species have become extinct.

Pictures of Fish European Minnow Pictures and European Minnow Fishes Kind

European Minnow is a species of freshwater fish and member of carp family that can be found throughout most of Eurasia, Great Britain, and from Spain to eastern Siberia. They are predominant in cool streams and well-oxygenated lakes and ponds. They are known for moving in large schools (groups of hundreds and thousands of fishes). Although they are sometimes called as Eurasian Minnows but the name is misleading because they occur only in fewer parts of Asia.

European minnow is a small, slender and dark-colored fish with blunt snout and small scales. Their belly is cream to pearl colored and changes to red in males during spawning season. Their size ranges from 8 to 10 cm long. They are common in fast flowing freshwaters and well-drained vegetated ponds. They are rarely used as aquarium fish despite the breeding in captivity being feasible. In aquariums, they should be kept in cold and fresh waters with a good supply of oxygen and a reasonable water current. In Scotland and Germany, European minnows are rarely found, where they have been declared as legally protected species.

Barracuda is a ray-finned fish that is known for its large size (up to six feet in length and a foot in width in some of the species) and fearsome appearance. Barracudas can be found in tropical and sub tropical oceans throughout the world. It can be found only in salt waters. They are found both singly or in swarms around reefs and also in open sea. Barracuda is a voracious predator that hunts using a strategy of wait and ambush. They rely on short bursts of speed to overrun their prey. It can reach a speed of up to 27 mph or 43 kmph.

Barracuda has a long and fairly compressed body that is covered with small and smooth scales. Large barracudas are generally solitary in their habitats and do not stick around to care for their younger ones. They feed on fish of all types. Many a times, large barracudas eat young barracudas. Like sharks, barracudas have a bad reputation of being dangerous to human beings. They often mistake snorkelers as predators and follow them to scavenge the remains of prey after an attack. Barracudas are formidable hunters and thus should be respected. They can perfectly defend themselves against human attacks. Hand feeding or trying to touch them should be strictly avoided.

Pictures of Fish Antarctic Icefish Fishes Pictures and Antarctica Icefish Fishes Kind

Antarctic Icefish is a largely endemic, dominant fish in the cold continental waters surrounding Antarctica. Majority of the Antarctic Icefish live at seawater temperature -2 and 4 degree centigrades but some of the sub polar species inhabit waters that may be as warm as 10 degree centigrades around New Zealand and South America.

Antarctic Icefish have evolved a variety of interesting physiological and biochemical adaptations with which they can survive in cold and stable seawater temperatures of Southern Ocean, many being able to survive in the freezing and ice-laden waters. Most notable physiological aspect of Antarctic Icefish is they have only 1% hemoglobin unlike other animal species that have up to 45% hemoglobin in their blood. They can survive without large parts of hemoglobin due to high oxygen contents of cold waters of southern ocean and also due to the fact that oxygen is absorbed and distributed directly by the plasma. Antarctic Icefish is considered to the only marine fish species flock.

Great white sharp or white death or white pointer is an exceptionally large mackerel shark found in coastal and offshore waters in almost all the regions, which have a temperature in the range of 12 to 24 degree centigrades. Larger concentration of white shark is found in southern coasts of Australia, off South Africa, California, and Mexico and to some extent in Central Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Highest population of white sharks is found in Dyer Island, South Africa, where much of research on shark is carried out. They are also found in tropical waters of Caribbeans and in Mauritius, Madagascar, Kenya and the Seychelles.

Undoubtedly, great white shard is world’ largest known and alive predatory fish. Great white shark can grow up to 6-6.5 meters in length and up to 2-2.5 tons in weight. Essentially, white shark is an epipelagic fish but they can also be observed in inland tributaries in the presence of rich game like fur seals, sea lions, other sharks and large bony fish species. It is an open ocean dweller, mostly found close to the surface and also down to the depths of up to 1,300 meters.

Electric eel despite the name eel, is not a true eel, rather it is a knifefish or very near to catfish. Electric eels, as the name suggests, can generate a powerful electrical shock that it uses both for hunting and self defense. Electric eels are obligate air breathers, which rise to the surface every 10 minutes or so to gulp the air after which they go back to the bottom.

Electric eels have an elongate and cylindrical body. They can grow up to 2 meters in length and 20 kg in weight. They are the largest species of their biological family. Color on the back is gray-brown and yellow or orange on the belly. Mouth is square and is positioned right at the snout. They have no scales. Electric eels have three organs that generate electricity main organ, hunter’s organ and Sachs organ. These three organs comprise 80% of the body. These organs are made of electrocytes, which are lined up in such a way that current flows through them and produces an electric charge. Electric eels generate an electric pulse in a very similar way to that of a battery. The shock produced by an electric eel could be fatal for an adult human.
