Pictures of Killifish and Killifish Informations

Dedicated fish owners and breeders are enchanted with the Killifish. It belongs to the family of fish species called aplocheilidae, which are found in tropical and subtropical areas around the globe except Australia. Killifish are very beautiful in appearance but are quite a handful in terms of care and maintenance. Killifish come from diverse habitats and each breed has different needs that vary from simple to difficult to maintain. Only top quality food and water must be utilized to keep the Killifish healthy and happy. The lifespan of the Killifish is extraordinarily short. They live in puddles of mud. Hatching and maturation are completed in just three weeks.

Killifish come in many species differing greatly in pattern and color. The male Killifish are brighter in color and have larger dorsal fins than their female partners. Killifish have heads that are flat on top. These fish have curved, long and pointed teeth.

Eagle Ray is a family of large ray fishes that live in the open sea. Eagle rays are excellent swimmers and can also jump several meters above the sea levels. Spotted eagle rays,  known as bonnet rays, have a very beautiful ray with numerous white spots on its overall inky body. Bonnet rays can grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) in length. Spotted eagle rays are widespread in the tropical areas of all the oceans including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

Eagle rays have long tails and well-defined bodies as compared to other ray fishes. Their size range from 48cm (19 inches) to 9 meters (30 feet) long. They feed on snails, mussels and crustaceans by crushing their shells with the help of their extremely hard teeth. Common eagle rays are distributed all over the Eastern Atlantic including the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea. Bat eagle ray is an important species in the Pacific Ocean. Common eagle rays can grow up to 180cm (6 feet) including their tail. Eagle rays generally live close to coastal areas in the depths 1-30 meters. Their tail looks like a whip, which may be as long as the entire body, and is armed with a sting. They can be often spotted cruising along the sandy beaches in very shallow waters.

Cisco is a salmonid (family of ray-finned fish) fish. They differ from other members of the genus by having upper and lower jaws of approximately equal length. Five endemic species of Laurentian Great Lakes are thought to be of very recent evolution. Cisco species have recently been subjected to lots of research that is being carried out to determine the relationships among the species that have evolved recently.

Ciscoes are extensively explored in commercial fisheries especially in the Laurentian Great Lakes, where deep water forms are considered as the basis of chub fishery. Chub fishery was exclusively based on the various species of Ciscoes. The fishery continues even when the stocks of Ciscoes are falling and other species are spreading through the system. At many places, Cisco species have declined in great numbers. Some of the breeders believe that Ciscoes represent  an incipient species flock. Lots of debates have taken place to  ascertain which were the true species and which were not, particularly due to the facts that some of the species have become extinct.

Pictures of Fish Eulachon Pictures and Eulachon Fishes Kind

Eulachon is a small anadromous ocean fish native along the Pacific Coast of North America from Northern California to Alaska. Eulachon is an important part of the diet of many ocean and shore predators. Besides, it is also used as a prominent source of food item for many people living near its spawning streams. Eulachons are also known by other names such as hooligan, ooligan or candlefish. Candlefish is the name given by early explorers of eulachons who often dried fatty spawning fish and strung on a wick, to be burned as a candle.

Eulachons often spend most of their adult lives in the ocean and return to their native freshwater streams and rivers to spawn. Due to this typical nature, one stream may see regular large runs of eulachons while a neighboring stream may have very few or none. In may happen that a river that  sees large runs of eulachons every year, may all of a sudden witness a year with no returns of eulachons. Eulachon feed mainly on planktons, fish eggs, insect larvae and small crustaceans. Eulachon is an important part of the diet and a valuable trade item for several communities along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska.

Bull Shark is a shark that is widespread all over the world in warm and shallow waters along coasts and in rivers. The name bull shark comes from stocky shape, broad and flat snout and aggressive and unpredictable behavior. Since the bull sharks dwell in shallow waters, they are more dangerous to human beings than any other species of sharks. Three shark species that are most likely to attack human beings include bull sharks, tiger sharks and great white sharks. They can travel far up the rivers and thus are responsible for the majority of shark attacks on humans.

Bull sharks can tolerate fresh water unlike most of the other marine sharks. Due to its wide range and diverse habitats, there are many names for bull sharks such as Sundarbans or Ganges shark in India, Zambezi shark or simply Zambi in Africa and Nicaragua shark, among other. Bull shark is found in different geographical locations throughout the world and can travel long distances. Bull sharks are large and stout animals that can reach up to 7 feet in length and weigh up to 90 kg. They feed on fish, rays, dolphins, turtles, birds, mollusks and crustaceans.

Antarctic Icefish is a largely endemic, dominant fish in the cold continental waters surrounding Antarctica. Majority of the Antarctic Icefish live at seawater temperature -2 and 4 degree centigrades but some of the sub polar species inhabit waters that may be as warm as 10 degree centigrades around New Zealand and South America.

Antarctic Icefish have evolved a variety of interesting physiological and biochemical adaptations with which they can survive in cold and stable seawater temperatures of Southern Ocean, many being able to survive in the freezing and ice-laden waters. Most notable physiological aspect of Antarctic Icefish is they have only 1% hemoglobin unlike other animal species that have up to 45% hemoglobin in their blood. They can survive without large parts of hemoglobin due to high oxygen contents of cold waters of southern ocean and also due to the fact that oxygen is absorbed and distributed directly by the plasma. Antarctic Icefish is considered to the only marine fish species flock.

Goldfish is one of the most common aquarium fish and water garden fish. It is a small member of carp family of fish. It is one of the earliest domesticated fish. Goldfish are small, colorful, inexpensive and popular pond fish. They can survive in ponds as long there is enough oxygen and the pond does not freeze solid. They are usually classified as coldwater fish. They live in unheated aquariums.

Selective breeding of goldfish has produced several color variations over the years, with few being far away from the original golden color of the domesticated fish. Goldfish can lose their golden color by varying the spectrum of light under which they are kept. Goldfish can grow up to 22 inches in length and around 10 pounds in weight. Household goldfish kept in bowls can live up to 6-8 years. There are several varieties of goldfishes such as calico, celestial eye, comet, lionhead, bubble eye, butterfly tail and black moor, among others. Besides, several new varieties are also created by selective breeding.

Antarctic cod fish is famous for producing antifreeze glycoprotein that allows it to survive in the ice laden waters of southern sea surrounding Antarctic sea. They are also known as antarctic toothfish. Antarctic cods have a heartbeat rate of once every six seconds. Scientists are doing research on antarctic cods for cardiac medicines especially in human conditions involving low heartbeats or patients with the conditions of hypothermia.

They are very large fishes and can be caught in the waters below 2000 meters depth. Fully grown antarctic cod fishes are grayish in color, weigh around 135 kg and have a length of more than 2 meters. The flesh of antarctic cod is white and is rich of high oil content. Although the name is antarctic cod but they do not belong to cod family. The taste is very similar to cod and that is why the name antarctic cod. They generally feed on various types of fish. However, they are also known to eat almost anything including the remains of penguins caught by seals and orca on the surfaces.

Atlantic salmon, known as king of fish, is found in northern Atlantic Ocean and in rivers that flow into the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. The title King of Fish is appropriate for several reasons. Foremost being their capacity to make a tremendous journey during their lifetime. They migrate from fresh water streams to feeding ground in North Atlantic Ocean and back again to spawn at the same place whether they were hatched. Atlantic salmon is an anadromous (habit of migrating from sea to fresh water for spawning) migratory fish unlike common eel, which are catadromous (migrating from fresh water to sea for spawning)

Atlantic salmons are most beautiful fishes; streamlined, silver and graceful. They are considered as symbol of clean and unspoiled waters that run wild into sea. They are very powerful fish and greatest fighters. They feed on larger foods such as Arctic Squids, sand eels, amphipods, arctic shrimp and occasionally herring. During their feeding season they grow rapidly. They do not require salt water. There are numbers of fully freshwater species existing throughout the northern hemisphere.
