Eels or true eels are an order of fish with many sub-orders, families, genera and species. Electric eels and spiny eels are not the members of true eels despite their similarly shaped bodies. Freshwater eels and marine eels are the most popular food items in Japanese, Korean and Chinese cuisines especially in Cantonese and Shanghai cuisines. European eels and many other freshwater eels are also famous in Europe and the United States.

Eels have an elongated body and their length ranges from 5cm to 3.75 meters depending upon the species. Eels do not have pelvic fins and in many species even pectoral fins are absent. Their dorsal and anal fins are fused with the caudal fins or tail fins. Most of the eels live in shallow waters or hide at the bottom layers of the ocean. They dwell in holes, called as eel pits. Some of the species are active swimmers and live at a depth of more than 500 meters. While feeding, eels drift along the water surface and eat dissolved nutrients.

Elephantnose fish is an elephantfish native to the rivers of West and Central Africa especially in the lower Niger River Basin. They prefer muddy and slow moving rivers and pools with submerged branches. Elephantnose is the most commonly available aquarium fish in various aquarium stores throughout the United States.

Elephantnose has a dark brown to black laterally compressed body with a rear dorsal fin and anal fin of the same length. Their most striking feature is a elephant-trunk-like protrusion from their head. The protrusion is not actually a nose but a sensitive extension of the mouth that it used for self defense, communication, navigation and for finding their food items such as worms and insects. This organ and rest of the body is covered with electro-receptors. They have a very poor eyesight and hence they use a weak electric field for locating and catching their prey and for navigating in dark waters. They usually live from 6 to 10 years.

Pictures of Fish Eulachon Pictures and Eulachon Fishes Kind

Eulachon is a small anadromous ocean fish native along the Pacific Coast of North America from Northern California to Alaska. Eulachon is an important part of the diet of many ocean and shore predators. Besides, it is also used as a prominent source of food item for many people living near its spawning streams. Eulachons are also known by other names such as hooligan, ooligan or candlefish. Candlefish is the name given by early explorers of eulachons who often dried fatty spawning fish and strung on a wick, to be burned as a candle.

Eulachons often spend most of their adult lives in the ocean and return to their native freshwater streams and rivers to spawn. Due to this typical nature, one stream may see regular large runs of eulachons while a neighboring stream may have very few or none. In may happen that a river that  sees large runs of eulachons every year, may all of a sudden witness a year with no returns of eulachons. Eulachon feed mainly on planktons, fish eggs, insect larvae and small crustaceans. Eulachon is an important part of the diet and a valuable trade item for several communities along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska.
